New from A timeless tale with plenty of history and a fair dose of mystery, Edmund Fitzgerald: The Legendary Great Lakes Shipwreck is a fascinating account of the 1975 wreck of the Fitzgerald during a Lake Superior storm and the total loss of its crew.
Elle Andra-Warner’s very readable book presents more than just the tale of the wreck, delving into the history of the Fitzgerald family, the rise of the shipping industry on the Great Lakes (and the wrecks that accompanied it), and a little background on the ferocity of Lake Superior’s weather.
After a thorough exploration of the Fitzgerald’s past and how the great ship came to be, the book continues into an account of the Fitzgerald’s last fated voyage in Nov. 1975. It chronicles the events of that final trip, from the departure across the lake, to a furious squall and the last communication with the captain, as well as the Fitzgerald’s disappearance and the subsequent search for the ship and any survivors.
Following the wreck there were many exploratory missions first to find, then to observe and analyze the great ship’s remains where they rest the beneath the surface of the lake. Andra-Warner recounts each expedition, and details what they’ve discovered. Still, the mystifying questions remain—to this day no one has been able to determine how and why the ship went down that night.
